Margaret Elliot Art: Expressions of Emotion

The first time I saw one of Margaret Elliot's paintings I was immediately drawn to it.  I don't know if it was the colors or the line drawing, but it was full of energy, life and nothing like I'd ever seen.

Since then I've always been a huge fan of hers and in 2010 we finally met while we were both in The Harding Art Show.  It was an honor to show our work together just a few booths apart.  One thing is for sure, her paintings were flying off the wall.

She has also had quite a lot of success in Nashville getting the attention of Music City's largest collectors.  She sells her work among Nashville's most popular painters and just recently became a featured artist at the prestigious Nina Kuzina Fine Art gallery at Loews Vanderbilt Hotel.

Today I'm featuring her beautiful music inspired work, but don't be fooled, she paints sailboats, sheep, cows, fish, portraits, chairs, flowers and pretty much anything that inspires her.  So please enjoy her art, as I know you will and check out her website for more paintings and information.  She frequently shows at Middle Tennessee's largest art events, so keep an eye out for her, say hello and buy a painting -- it will be a great investment!

Ray Stephenson: Making it in Music City

Ray Stephenson is a hit songwriter, musician and phenomenal visual artist making his wildest dreams a well-deserved reality.

He has an incredible resume including 2 major record deals, the title tracks on Kenney Chesney’s album, Hemingway’s Whiskey, and Blake Shelton/Miranda Lambert’s upcoming duo album and numerous other cuts by artists like Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard and many more.

Today he continues to quickly climb to the top, but in the beginning it started out slower than he had hoped. This is a classic story of a man making it in Music City and how for Ray: Dreaming is more important than doing.

Ray moved to Nashville 13 years ago leaving his small town for the big city as he calls it, "A young, dumb and cocky 21 year old."  For 10 years he struggled with successes here and there wondering if his songwriting career would ever take off. He told me over the phone in our interview, “It seemed like an impossible thing to get a song recorded, if I’d known how hard it would be I would have stayed back home.”

Although a songwriting career is never an easy one, Ray did what any dreamer would do, kept his eye on the prize and continued to move forward. The idea of quitting never entered his mind, but after 10 years of laborious work he knew he needed a break and took a 3 month vacation from writing and shifted his focus towards painting.

During those few months of painting, Ray learned a lesson that would alter his life forever. He discovered the Tao Te Ching, or Book of the Way, which is an ancient text that (provides advice that imparts balance and perspective, teaching us how to work for the good with the effortless skill that comes from being in accord with the Tao - the basic principle of the universe.)  It teaches that practicing is more important than doing and it has similarities to the Christian saying, “Let go and let God.”   He applied those philosophies to this art and writing and began to burst with creativity.

Ray went from painting 2 pieces of art a year to nearly 150. He went from writing 115 songs a year with BMI, Sony and Curb with maybe 6-8 really good songs to writing 30 songs a year with the same results. In the last three years since discovering the Tao, Ray’s songwriting cuts and success has grown exponentially. He says, “Now I feel like I never have to work. If I want to paint – I paint, if I want to write – I write, if I want to work in the yard – I do that."

Today Ray is living his dream and that small yet so simple change in his thinking is what he attributes to all his success.  He wants to take his art even further and combine his two loves of music and art to create a body of work that directly reflects the songs he has written. He wants to paint his songs and that's something that he doesn't practice very often.  He also believes that the best way to sell his songs will be through his albums, so he'll be writing and recording working towards his next big dream, winning a Grammy.

When I asked him if he had any advice for new-to-Nashville songwriters with hopes of making their own dreams come true he said, "If you want to get ahead don’t work harder, dream harder."

For more of Ray you can find him playing most Friday nights at the Corner Pub in Green Hills and view his artwork all around town at Simon Ripley’s Music and Art, 12th and Porter, Hotel Indigo on West End and Alfred Williams.  You can also visit his website at www.raystephenson.com and like his page on facebook at  www.facebook.com/RayStephensonPaintings.

Below is a small sample of his music and artwork, please share if Ray’s story has inspired you -- so you can inspire others.

Andy Detwiler, A Musically Inspired Fine Artist

During one of the monthly Art Walk's in Hillsboro Village I went into a  hair salon and saw Andy Detwiler's work for the very first time.  It blew me away right from the beginning and I knew I had to own a piece.

I had absolutely no cash, especially not enough to buy any art, but Andy being the incredibly nice guy that he is, offered to meet me the next day so I could buy my new baby and bring it home.

Now the piece I purchased hangs in my kitchen and I see it's beauty every single day.  I receive so many compliments from friends and family, I knew I had to share his talent with you.

In Andy's words:
I was born into a family rooted deep in traditional values and heritage, who encouraged me at an early age to follow my dreams. I realized that I was happiest when I was creating something and this creative drive has continued throughout my life as I explored different mediums of oil, glass, and eventually film.

Raised along the coastal plains of the deep south, I eventually settled in Nashville, TN. Over the past ten years, I have experimented with a variety of photographic styles, including traditional landscapes, soft impressionistic images, and abstracts. More recently, I have begun to experiment with photographic transfers to wood panels in order to gain more texture and substance in my art.

My current works draw on the heritage that instilled in me and focuses on the culture that that is reminds me of my roots. This subject matter works perfectly with the transfer techniques, resulting in distressed images with creased lines that are reminiscent of a favorite photograph folded and kept close in a pocket.

To view or purchase Andy's work please visit his website at: http://www.detwiler-photography.com.

Bella Ruse will be Dazzling at the Bluebird June 5th

Think back to when you were a little kid.  Life was pretty good, wasn't it?  There was nothing to worry about and everything was awesome! Belle Ruse wants to take you back there -- to a world where wonder and amusement still exist.

Lead singer, Kay Gilette has roots in Opera and Jazz, but has landed smack dab into the indie/folk music scene with band bro Joseph Barker.  Their newly released and first full album, Kuhzoo, (fully funded by fans on Kickstarter.com) has had amazing reviews and leaves their loyal listeners wanting more.

"Whether you think it's folksy jazz with pop hooks or pop-folk with a jazz twist, Minneapolis duo Bella Ruse are definitely on to something." Bethany Leavey, OurStage.com

"Bella Ruse grabs you with a deceptively simple beauty and a very distinctive voice. Some of my favorite music this year." Shelby Miller, Shifted Sound

This self sufficient, extremely crafty ensemble has even hit the road eco-style in a tour van powered by vegetable oil.  That creative and thoughtful energy also pours itself into the cover art and posters all created by Kay.

She is amazing talent -- everything she touches turns into an honest example of who she is and where she wants to go.

Kay and Joseph have been on three national tours, impressed festival and club audiences from coast to coast and even had their songs played on radio and television programs worldwide.  Their track 'Push On' won them a spot opening for Sarah McLachlan and Metric at Lilith Fair in 2010.

So go see this incredible duo on Sunday at the Bluebird Cafe on June 5th, I'm certain you'll be entertained! Performance begins at 6:30 PM.  Albums and merchandise are all available for sale on their website at bellaruse.com.

Flatrock Music & Arts Festival May 28th

This Saturday the Flatrock Music and Arts Festival will be held at the Coleman Community Center featuring Nashville's best in music and art.  Last year I went and came home with three great pieces of art and I spent less than $300.  If you're looking to grow your collection without a lot of money this festival is for you!

I know many great artists and songwriters that will be participating this year, so go and support our local community!  Artist Kelly Parsons will be there with lots of great work and artist/songwriter and creator of Nashville Art Makers, Ronny Criss will be hitting the acoustic stage around 12:30.  My friends from Simon Ripley's Music and Art will be there too so go say hi, they're the best!

What I love best about this festival is how they connect the entire community together.  I wrote an article about just that last year, and you can read it again by clicking here.  It's kinda feels like a music and arts family reunion -- so if you love music and art, go check it out Saturday, May 28th from 10 AM - 4 PM and go early too because I promise the art will be gone at the end of the day!

For more details visit their website at http://flatrockfestival.com/ or their event page on facebook.

Erika Chambers & The Vespers at Puckett's, May 25th

Go see this show!  I first met Erika Chambers over a year ago at The Rutledge when I saw her perform for the first time.  Since then we've become friends and even did a music and art show together benefiting The Contributor newspaper in October 2010.

One day last summer while having lunch at PM on Belmont she graciously gave me her new album and immediately it become one of my favorites!  Her music is nothing but beautiful melodies with lyrics that fill you full of hope, all sung by the voice of an angel.  I say she is an angel because she truly following a path illuminated by God.

One of my favorite lyrics in her song, Light at Eventide, was used in a graphic print I created for the The Contributor art show last fall.  It says, "Chase the shadows from my soul, fill my sky with rays of hope, so I know I'm not alone."  That particular phrase struck my heart because when the darkness in life tries to overcome me, all it takes is a prayer to be filled with the spirit again, and she understands that too.  I know God brought our paths together many many times and that insight is something I do not take lightly.

So do not miss her show tonight at Puckett's in Franklin!  She will be joined by special guests, The Vespers, for a first time, one of a kind, combo show that will be a special treat for all that attend.  For more information please click here.

P.S. If you miss the show tonight, she will be playing at Musician's Corner this Saturday, May 28th 3-6 PM.

Artist Bio

Erika Chambers is a modern artist with a nostalgic twist. She has a passion for introducing new 'traditional' roots music into the classic folk scene. New listeners often assume that Erika's songs are creative renditions of old folk favorites and are surprised to find that she pens nearly every song she performs. Her music is timeless, and her voice delicately captures that quality in every song. With her unique writing style, unforgettable vocals, and captivating instrumentation, Erika is quickly capturing the attention of the Americana / Bluegrass music scene in Nashville and throughout the country. On Garageband.com, the online independent music giant, Erika has won nearly forty awards, including Track of the Week and Best Female Vocals on numerous occasions.

Show at 7:00, No Cover Charge, Tips Appreciated, call 615-794-5527 for dinner reservations.

Nashville Guitar Artwork Raises Money For Musicians

Ok fearless followers and share warriors I need your help!  The artwork I created for Retune Nashville, After The Flood, 40x40 is up for auction during the month of February -- and the whole world needs to know about it!

The starting bid is $400 and that is ridiculous!  The art was made with priceless guitars donated from famous Nashville musician (Brent Mason) who lost his guitars to the Nashville Flood of 2010.

There is also a real playable guitar built into the piece and those materials cost $$$. There are Grover banjo tuning pegs, Epiphone Les Paul pick up, Fender Stratocaster volume knob, Danelectro Mini Honeycomb amp, acoustic bridge pins and countless hours of labor!

Do you want to know the BEST part?  All the money raised goes to help out Nashville musicians.  That is crazy GOOD!

So please go to the website RetuneNashville.org and share share share!  The point is to get as many people bidding as possible so that this priceless and memorable piece of work raises lots of money for the cause it was created for.  Watch and listen to the art play music on my YouTube Channel and share that video too! Click here for the video and thank you for sharing!

Custom Created Art in Nashville Tennessee

One of my favorite things to do is create custom art. From beginning to end I think about the person I'm making it for and how I can give them art that's truly authentic.  I ask myself,

"What would they like and what do I see?"

Recently, I had the pleasure to create a Christmas present painting for Country Music star, Deana Carter.  Above all other paintings, this one was my favorite because I connected with it on a very personal level.  Using a photograph of Deana and her Dad, Fred Carter, I had to make the painting look like the picture, but not be an exact portrait. (below)

Deana and her Dad had a very special bond through music.  She pursued the music industry in Nashville because of him.  Fred Carter was the premier guitar player in Nashville in the 1960s and recorded with Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan and Joan Boez to name a few.  I connected with this story because I have a very similar bond with my Dad through music.

I paint and write about everything music because growing up my Dad always had a guitar in his hand.  He continues to inspire everything I do.  I understood their father/daughter bond through music and put that energy into the painting.

That experience is a perfect example of why I love making art for other people.  Connecting with others is one of life's greatest gifts.

If you would like to join the others who own a custom artwork, please email with your questions at beth@binglishART.com.

Micheal 'Simon' and John 'Ripley' opened this fine music and art establishment just a year ago and are moving forward on a mission, to support the local arts and give every customer what they want, an amazing shopping experience.

They carry guitars, gear and gifts; such as fine art by local artists Rachel Kice, Ray Stephenson, Margaret Elliott, Dean Tomasek, Brenda Stein, The Twisted Sisters, Marleen De waele-De Bock and many more.  The products range from large paintings to small prints, jewelry and pens carved from wood used to make actual guitars.  There are so many beautiful things to see in the store you will just have to stop by for a visit.  The employees and hospitality are first class, so I'm sure you'll love it!

Art Defining Music in Estel Gallery

Cash in London 1966 by Jon Langford
An art inspired by music exhibition is kinda like my dream come true with a organic cherry on top.  There's nothing I love more than art inspired by music, but that's kinda goes without saying hence the nature of this blog.

I guess my Christmas has come early this year because there are seven musically inspired artists on display at the Estel Gallery in Nashville, Tennessee.

Art Defining Music is a new exhibition featuring work by Wes Freed, known for his album covers for rock band Drive-by-Truckers, Bob Masse, concert poster art king, Steve Keene, Jon Langford, Brian Kershisnik, Cole Closser and J. Micah Nelson.

It's a genius idea to group these artists together in Music City.  They are from all over the country, even Canada, so the art will be a great representation of the music our nation loves, not just Nashville.

The opening reception will be held this Saturday, December 4th from 6-9 PM during the Downtown Gallery Crawl.
